Sport is different, especially sport with a salary cap. Financial commitments to players have to be balanced with spending wisely across the squad. You may recall the Matty Russell situation? Signed on a silly long contract and we had to PAY for a club to take him of our hands as he was a dead weight on our cap.
By all means sign world beaters on longer contracts as they offer more to the team. Hughes is a decent, utilitarian player. But that's all.
As for job security, this is such a myth. Most employed people have 1 months notice - that's it. Self employed people have none. Some people have zero hour contracts. I bet the staff at Debenhams would like 3 years job security right now, or our resident taxi driver.
Best job security there is - at least a years salary, ideally more, sitting in the bank.
