His one let down is his defence. Lets hope some of the experianced players ie Orr Fozzard and Mathers can put there stamp on that weak part of our play.
Our defence has been poor during his reign and we haven't performed in the one-off 'must win' games against relatively weak opposition- Wakey at home in the relegation decider & Crusaders away last year are two that immediately spring to mind. Having said that with the players & finances at his disposal after a shaky start our league position at the end of the last 2 seasons has been as good as we could have reasonably hoped for.
Think I stand with most Cas fans (and I'm talking about the people that go to the games not those 'fans' that don't actually attend then criticise based on what they've heard from a mate or read in the press) in being a fan of Matterson.
In the last couple of seasons with a slightly better sqaud at his disposal we've played some entertaining rugby. As has been noted above, I've no doubt that his reputation in Australia has helped us to sign better overseas players than we might have done otherwise.
The glaring weakness, again as has already been picked up on, is our defence under his tenure. Even when we were in NL1 in 2007 and hammering teams on a weekly basis we very rarely prevented even the weakest of opposition sides scoring a try. If you look at our 'points against' whilst in Superleague its nearly always ranked very near the bottom of the table even if our position is somewhat higher. People might say its inevitable with the way that Cas play that we'll concede plenty of points but a lot of the points we concede are just soft tries - players failing to maintain concentration defending near their own line etc - and this is something the coach could address by instilling more discipline into the players and putting more emphasis on this aspect.
